The main ones,Candida, Eugene and jam are all written to be strong characters, andthe way they were portrayed in the production our class saw lived upto this classification. However, this doesnt apply to everything.Some of the characters were stretched to farm the play appeal to anewer generation in a newer day and age, at the expense of the dignityof at least one of the characters. Eugene.Eugene is a disowned poet who travel in love with Candida, the wife ofReverend James. Hes a brilliant artist and spews nothing but truismsfrom beginning to end. However, the words dont really match theperformance. Eugene uses a direct of language that connotes adignified, noble upbringing, which is supported within the context ofthe story.
